Big Breakthrough

*

I have put in many hours this week on the novel. I am not done yet. Each step I make gets me closer to completion and yet, sometimes, farther away.

I was going to type, "farther away, it seems." But that has been one of my own discoveries this week is how much I qualify and discount in my story. Especially this story which was first written six years ago. I believe that my writing has improved in many ways since that time, but there is still room for improvement, need for feedback from outside eyes and brains.

This morning I started working on the timeline and plot map, which includes physical location of characters and movement in the story, where important events take place. I have made note of needing to that for at least a couple of weeks. This week, here, I have noted it and it was a major thing I needed to do which I put in my notes. I was going to start it last night, but it was late, I was getting tired, and I knew I wanted to start on it while I was fresh.

Which I did this morning.

I had to stop for lunch. I tend to overtake one end of the main table when I'm writing here. At least I have up until now because I am taking notes on one set of paper and making revisions and have my laptop. I take up space. So I paused for lunch. No problem.

After we were done eating and the table again cleared, I got back to it.

And I DID it! Making the map was slow at times. Some incidents and connections were not as clear as they seemed on the page or in my head. Who went where. What happened before or after what, was complicated.

I was happy it was complicated because I don't want my novel to be boring. But it wasn't as easy to plot it out as I thought it would be. Silly me.

Amazing things happened as I plotted and circled. Drew solid lines and dotted lines.

I realized that the section I moved to the front of the book was not an attention grabber, a hook. No. It really did have to be the first thing that happened. That is the inciting incident. It has to happen first or nothing else makes sense. (Or perhaps it's too twisting and manipulative to make it not be the first important thing.)

I also realized that the reason I moved it to the front originally, the thing I thought had to happen? It couldn't happen there. No way. It had to happen in a different time and place.

That was the big breakthrough. Once I realized that, things really fell into place. Not all of it easily; some events still had to be figured out, counted and timed in a way, noted and considered.

Which I did. I had the visual map. Then it got to a point where I had to write it out in a first, second, third, etc way. In that process I discovered that there were two incidents at one point - they needed to occur somewhat concurrently, so I had to do some thinking about how I wanted to place them in terms of story interest and timing. And I did that, too.

So, now. What's next? I believe I can move forward with rewrites now. Actually with some re-vision. There are no major changes in characters or the significant events. But there are some other changes related to the story and I think I understand now and it will move forward.

This will not be a fast process. But I have a map now. I know where the characters came from and where they're going.

Now it's time to get back to it. I was so excited that I wanted to take a writing break to write this update from the fogged in Rockaway Beach.

Jupiter Transit

From astrologer and author Hazel Dixon-Cooper (click on her name to read the rest of her June astrology notes).

June 11, Jupiter spins out of Taurus and into Gemini, where it stays until June 2013. This deepens the message that the universe wants us to get out in the world to explore new ideas, meet new people, and broaden our minds. Jupiter is full of luck and fun. It’s also the planet of excess. Gemini relationships and plans can have a short shelf life. While Jupiter’s in Gemini, it will be easier to assume that every idea you hatch and every person you meet is perfect.

Although this transit is going to be mostly upbeat and intellectually stimulating, it’s wise to think before you dive into anything.

Looking Up

There have been several time related emails and posts crossing my path recently. Astrology, astrology and sexuality for all 12 signs, Mayan art and calendar. More.

Since this seems to be a topic on the minds of many in my circle of 3-D life and virtual life, I thought I'd pass a little along.

I'm not an expert. Sometimes I don't know what I believe but I'm open. Exploring. Yes, exploring is probably a better word than just being "open" to possibilities, though I am that, as well. I know a little bit about a lot of things. And I keep finding more that I know nothing about or learning more about some things which I thought I knew quite a bit but am (sometimes) excited to find that I am missing important pieces of information. And, sometimes, I find that I actually know more than I thought I knew, which is both a good feeling and a not so good feeling. The not so good feeling comes from seeking something more or something else or not trusting myself and my knowledge, skills experience. Although even that can lead to discoveries; if I'm open - see my post last week about going to hear a speaker and initially being disappointed.

All of that has nothing to do with astrology nor the Mayan calendar. Or not as far as I know, anyway.

I know a few of your eyes were attracted to the "sexuality" mention and are looking for the link. A few others of you may be thinking, oh no not that. So if you're looking for the link, here it is. The "Astrological Detective" is Andrea Gehrz, who translated and published an ancient Greek astrology text, an more. May the celestial vault shine into the bedroom! Sexual tips and tricks for all twelve signs by sexuality educator and performer Felice Shays. Hosted by Andrea L. Gehrz

Then astrologer and author Hazel Dixon-Cooper had a post which caught my attention: In Case You Were Worried. That caught my attention, so I clicked over to her website (I subscribe to her feeds). And from there I was led to the Mayan calendar story which, unexpectedly, is also about art.

And also about the fact that the Mayan calendar really isn't ending.

But I'll let you read about that yourself. It's an interesting article because of the Mayan calendar. And it's an interesting read because of the art. Read it here: Maya calendar workshop documents time beyond 2012 .

Things are looking up.

Mars Goes Retrograde - thanks, Hazel!

Hazel Dixon-Cooper always has some great write-ups about retrogrades. And other things astrological. But I do notice that I tend to catch her retrograde pieces most often.

Here is a snippet of  the whole article. It's worth clicking on over to read the in-depth analysis of this period we're entering.

When any planet goes retrograde, the energy of that planet is turned inward. You get a chance to re-think, re-evaluate, and revise. With Mars, this retrograde energy gives you a chance to get in touch with your deepest desires. Add Virgo’s focus on discrimination, self-analysis, and ability to blend body and spirit, and you get a rare opportunity to make serious changes for the better.

Mars is the planet of action, and about the least introspective planet in the zodiac. Mars is aggressive, passionate, and direct. During retrograde, this wild energy is internalized. You might feel nervous, irritable (Virgo), or a little paranoid. If you’re someone who .....

Via Hazel Dixon-Cooper: Mercury Going Retrograde

Thank you for the great tips for this Mercury retrograde period, Hazel!

I've been busy working on my new book about Mercury. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, remember your "re" words. Revise, review, repair, recheck, re-think, re-evaluate. The list goes on, but you understand. Mercury can cause miscommunication, lost messages, and electronic glitches. Back it up. Check it out. Get it fixed.

Until August 8, Mercury backs through Virgo then slips into Leo until it turns direct again on August 25. Here are five special tips for this cycle.

Tip One: Get organized. Does this look like your desk? I've been there too. Remember that a retro period is a good time to dump your junk. While Mercury retros through perfectionist Virgo, you'll be surprised at how much you can accomplish in just an hour or two a day.

Click on the title to read tips two to five, which include information about watching what you say, health, intuition, and time off.

Hazel Dixon-Cooper's Retrograde notes

Mercury has gone retrograde, again. And I've found Hazel's notes pretty accurate for possible influences. The last Mercury in retrograde was a tough one for me - and I don't usually notice them much. Shortly after the events in my life began, I saw the link to Hazel's site in my reader and there, surprise, was just what I was going through, along with some timelines and guidelines. Those really helped me get through that period with more calm and awareness.

Thank you, Hazel (who is a friend and fellow writer with Bonnie Hearn Hill, and whom I hope to meet on my trip down to Bonnie's soon).

Mercury Retrograde in Aries - March 30 to April 23, 2011

Mercury, the planet of communication and ideas, is retrograde in impatient, action-packed Aries. Your mind could buzz with new ideas and brainstorms. You could also receive invitations, offers, and meet new professional and personal contacts. You could feel energetic and enthused.

That’s the good news.

The caution is to pace yourself and think before you act. Remember that Aries is the sign of impulsive behavior, and is ruled by competitive and hot-headed Mars. During a retro period in Aries, your mouth can easily kick into gear about ten steps ahead of your brain. The result? Pissing contests, bad business deals, and lust-vs-love affairs.

On April 11, Mercury spins backward into Jupiter, then into Mars on April 19. This is the critical phase of the retro period and it’s critical to consider your actions before you proceed. Make sure you understand what you’re agreeing to before you jump into a project or take on more responsibility at work. Give yourself breathing space instead of jumping into bed, or dumping a relationship. Impulsive action now can turn into a major regret later. On a bright note, these days are good finds ways to inject new energy into old projects, ideas, or habits.

Hazel Dixon-Cooper: Aries New Moon

Astronomer and author Hazel Dixon-Cooper posted about the Aries New Moon. I'll just let you read her words. (and there is a link at the bottom to click to see your sun sign's horoscope during this period).

For those friends I've been around lately, this note about the "a sky filled with wild energy" may resonate. Note to myself : pay special attention to the bit about "slowing down..."

Thanks, Hazel!

Aries New Moon - Sunday, April 3, 2011

Sunday's New Moon in Aries adds even more mayhem to a sky already filled with wild energy. This anything-goes Moon joins the Sun, Jupiter, Uranus, and retrograde Mercury in this impulsive sign. The resulting shoot-from-the-hip force can make us feel as if we're on a runaway roller coaster. Although the next few days are ripe to bring opportunities, invitations, and lucky breaks, the best way to snag something good is to slow down. Think about your options and don't rush. You'll need to stay organized and keep your eyes open because navigating the upcoming week can be as tricky as maneuvering an L.A. freeway during rush hour. Here is a sign-by-sign look at how this dynamic energy could impact you:

Astrology for my Birthday Month

This is from astrologer Hazel Dixon-Cooper

Looks like as soon as I'm done with NaNoWriMo I need to get back to editing the novel and finishing the memoir (and then editing that, too). Hazel says to reach for the stars, so I will!

Happy Birthday, Sagittarius!

Your birthday month starts with Mercury and Mars both in your sign. You're never afraid to say what's on your mind. However, with both of these outspoken planets egging you on, you might need to muzzle yourself. Make sure you listen to what another person is saying instead of butting in with your opinion.
Your ruling planet, Jupiter, is moving forward again after almost four months of backstroking through the sky. This rush of energy could make you feel a surge of enthusiasm and optimism you haven't had in awhile. Your creativity also gets a shot in the arm. You may dream up anything from how to shave time and costs from an important work project to writing an award-winning screenplay.
You're one of the most generous humans on Earth, and these good vibes can put your holiday spirit in overdrive. That's your caution light. Be very careful that you don't get carried away and rack up the bills because you want to buy everything you see for everyone you know.
Consider spreading your spiritual bounty with volunteer work at a food pantry or homeless shelter. Help an older relative or neighbor hang holiday decorations. Join a cause. You can think of many ways to share your wealth without spending a dime.
The sky's full of fiery energy and so are you. Consider hosting a holiday party. Take a trip with your favorite person. Even if you aren't looking, do a random job search. The sky's poised to bring you rewards, surprises, and lots of fun.
This is your month to reach for the stars, Sadge. They're nearer than you think.
